Mona K. Lalim lives and works close to Oslo and have a second home and studio south of Rome. Lalim is best known for her oil paintings that she places in dialogue with three-dimensional objects and photographs. Her art practice is concerned with a reverse archaeological reconstruction of space, where the artworks produce a feeling of interaction between past and present. Lalim's method often consists of exploring classical oil painting by working backwards through the layers of the artworks searching for images of historical spaces, whereas the photographs are accurate observations of interiors.
Lalim’s work has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries in Norway and abroad, including Fundacoa D. Luis, Portugal, Museo Palazzo Della Bonifica, Italy, LUAG Museum, USA, Athens Museum of Modern art, Greece, Haugar Kunstmuseum, Drammen Museum, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Tromsø Kunsthall, Kunstnernes Hus, Museum Midt, Sørlandets Museum, Galleri LNM, Trøndelag senter for samtidskunst, Kunstnerforbundet, Trondhjem, Ålesund, Bryne and Bærum kunstforeninger and Galleri Semmingsen. Lalim has undertaken numerous commissions for ICA International Corporate Art on behalf of Viking Cruises, Thorstein Hagen’s art collection, Hapag Ljoyd, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Wilhelmsen's Art foundation and Fredrikstad and Bærum Council, among others.
Her work is held in public and private collections throughout the world, including Museo Palazzo Della Bonifica, Italy; Fundacao D. Luis, Portugal; Aker ASA, Rome; St. Annan Museum in Lübeck, Germany; LUAG Collection, PA, USA, as well as Norwegian collections such as Ringnes – Eiendomsspar Art Collection; Kulturrådets Public Art Collection; Kunst på Arbeidsplassen; Cathinka Gulbergs Medical Center; Hospice Stabekk, Bærum; Trondhjems Municipal Art Collection and Nordic Trustee art collection.
Lalim has received numerous project grants, artist stipends and support, including Guaranteed Income, from the Arts Council Norway and various embassies abroad.
